The lecture series is named after Guillaume Groen van Prinsterer (1801–1876), the father of modern Dutch Christian politics. To stimulate and support reflection about Christians in politics, not to speak of Christian politics as such, is not a luxury but a constant necessity. Every generation is called upon to articulate and assert first principles in a fresh way and to act upon them in response to the challenges of the day. On this occasion, as I retire from the Senate, I would like to share some of my thoughts on the challenges of our time, to follow up with what I believe is a promising perspective for a Christian approach to politics today. My guiding theme will be: What should be the main issue for a Christian in politics in a rapidly changing culture?
